This variety is similar to soybean, and is an annual dicotyledonous plant, belonging to the family of Fabaceae. When cooked Edamame is prepared as a whole bean in the pod shell and when eaten raw it is shelled similarly to eating peanuts where you eat the interior pod and discard the shell.
