Delphinium

Delphiniums are one of the most beloved cottage garden flowers of all time and a superb cut flower! Adored for their tall, stately appearance, Delphiniums produce 3' to 7" ft tall, sturdy stems adorned with densely packed, star shaped flower clusters ascending to the top of each elegant spire. The showy blooms can feature either white or black centers which are called "bees," and the flowers come in a variety of pastel colors or rich saturated jewel tones. Pollinators such as butterflies, bees and hummingbirds share a love affair with these gorgeous flowers. This hardy perennial plant is often used at the back of planting beds as a dramatic anchor backdrop featuring its height. Delphiniums prefer full sun or partial shade, fertile moist soil and grow best when planted in groupings. Staking is recommended in windy areas. For cut flower growers, this plant is best corralled or grown with netting support.
