Melinis nerviglumis Pink Crystals is a swoon worthy, warm season ornamental grass that produces exceptional, fluffy, 4" inch plumes in an array of pink tones. Plumes hover elegantly a foot above well formed, 18" to 20" inch grass clumps with tapered blue-green blade-leaves that remain primarily erect in a fan-shaped fashion. The blooms are highly sought after by floral creatives as they can be used fresh or dried as an everlasting element. This variety is cultivated by cut flower growers and grown seasonally as an annual. Blooms begin in mid-summer and last through the first fall frost. Scientifically known as Rhynchelytrum nerviglumis, this variety is also commonly called Bristle-Leaved Redtop Grass. This lovely specimen is native to South Africa and thrives in well drained soil and a sunny location. Melinis Pink Crystals will perform like a perennial in zones 8a and above and should be treated as a cold hardy annual in zones 7 and below. The grass clumps will turn a golden brown as fall gives way to winter.
