Details

Monarda punctata Spotted Bee Balm, also known as Dotted Mint or Dotted Horsemint flower, is a fantastic textural perennial beauty that will add a bit of whimsy and flare to any garden bed. The unique pagoda shaped, light lilac-pink flower heads typically have 3 or 4 levels of outward facing pointed petals with small, orchid shaped, dotted flower blooms surrounding the centers in between layers. Blooms top 24" inch stems of bright green foliage with a mild oregano scent. A hot spot for honey bees and butterflies, this unique bloom is drought tolerant once established and heat resistant. Commonly used in herbal medicine for tinctures and teas, this garden beauty makes wonderful lightly scented potpourri when dried. Packet: 100 seeds. The genus name Monarda honors Spanish botanist Nicolas Bautista Monardes, who studied herbal and medicinal plants from North America during the 16th century. The species name "punctata" means "dotted," referring to the small purple spots on the blossoms.
