Panicum virgatum Strictum, commonly called Switchgrass, is a colorful perennial grass derived from native prairies and bred for ornamental garden and cut flower production use. Vertical clumps grow to 36" inches and feature fall blooming panicles of tiny green flowers that mature to red seed heads. The thin, narrow, upright blades will turn from green to golden to bronze on the tips as fall approaches. This popular cut flower filler green ingredient can be used fresh or dried. Create a stunning border planting, line pathways or divide planter spaces in larger landscapes with this low maintenance grass that is drought tolerant once established. Clumps should be cut to the plant base in late winter to encourage new sprig growth. Plants will slowly spread by scaly rhizomes beneath the soil and will also often self-seed, but the cultivars do not come true from seed, so best propagation is by division. Patience is required for germinating - Panicum virgatum Strictum seeds will usually germinate in 10-90 days, even under good conditions germination may be erratic. Don't give up! Hardy to zone 5. Packet: 50 seeds.
