Sea Holly Blue Star, botanically known as Eryngium alpinum, produces exceptional, metallic electric blue, star-shaped flower heads that are encircled by soft, wispy, finely-divided bracts. This specialty flowering perennial was bred for the cut flower industry and has become a highly sought after garden ornamental for its striking appearance and textural interest. Well formed 30" inch plants send up multi branch stems, each topped with a floret, making this an exceptional and highly desirable filler flower for its unique appearance and exceptional color! Despite the "prickly" appearance, Blue Star is soft to the touch.
Cold stratification is required for successful germination and this variety prefers fluctuating temperatures to germinate. Sow outdoors in the fall for best results. When starting indoors, give 3 weeks at room temperature, followed by 5 weeks in the fridge. Once established, Blue Star will self seed and return in mass year upon year. Hardy to zone 4, deer resistant and tolerant of poor, sandy soils. Prefers full sun and well draining soil. Interestingly, both the roots and the leaves are edible. One of our favorite textural offerings. Packet: 25 seeds.
